The trip to Giverny - A Beautiful Glimpse
into Monet's Passion

When Monet and his family settled in Giverny in 1883 the  piece of land sloping gently down from the house to the road was planted with an orchard and enclosed by high stone walls.

A central walkway bordered with pines separated it into two parts. Monet had the pines cut down, keeping only the two yews closest to the house to please Alice. From this area of about one hectare, Monet made a garden full of perspectives, symmetries and colours.

In 1893, Monet bought the piece of land neighbouring his property on the other side of the railway. Through it flowed a small brook, the Ru.

Monet had a small pond dug, even though his neighbours were opposed. Later on the pond he had it enlarged to its present size. The water garden is inspired by Monet's love of the Japanese garden.

We crossed the road through an underground passage to the water garden (at the time of Monet it was necessary to cross the railway and the road). We followed the paths to take in all of Monet's perspectives, seeing easily the source of inspiration for many of his works. We reached the end of the path and became part of the scenes, on the Japanese bridge.

The central walkway near the house is spanned by iron arches on which climbing roses grow during the summer. Other rose trees cover the balustrade along the house, and are especially beautiful in the spring and summer.

Monet shaped his subjects in the gardens before painting them, recreating the living miracle on his canvas. Monet spent more than twenty years studying and being inspired by his water garden. His works also focussed on the Japanese bridge and the giant decorations of the Orangerie.

Always looking for mist and transparencies, Monet loved to work with the playful imagery of reflections in the waters of the pond, seeing the world strangely transfigured by the vibrant liquid element.

Monet and the other impressionists of his era contributed immensely to our cultures, and at Realart4U, we have many of his works in our product catalog. With a very reasonable investment, you too can have a piece of Giverny in your lounge or entertainment area.
